Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI): A Review of Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI)

As pet owners, it is our responsibility to make sure that our pets are as happy and healthy as we can possibly help them to be. Pet health insurance is a valuable resource in keeping the health of our pets up to par at all times, and Veterinary Pet Insurance, or VPI is one of the most popular and reputable companies to help you with your veterinary care needs. While VPI is a great pet insurance company to go with, they definitely aren’t for everyone. Here are a few tips and notes on Veterinary Pet Insurance and what it has to offer, so you know exactly what you may be dealing with.

Choose Your OWN Veterinarian!

Luckily, with Veterinary Pet Insurance you won’t have to worry about changing veterinary care providers, and that is one of the things that are really in your benefit. You can use any licensed veterinarian anywhere that you choose, but they always cover the same 90 percent of the eligible expenses on your veterinary bill.

VPI Pays Claims On a Reimbursement Basis

The idea behind pet medical insurance is to indemnify people for the medical expenses that their pet incurs. Veterinary Pet Insurance pays 90 percent of the eligible portion of the bill, but you must foot the bill first. After sending in the bill and a claim form attached to it, Veterinary Pet Insurance sends you a reimbursement check in the mail for 90 percent of your bill minus the $50 deductible.

Know the Exclusions

With every pet health insurance policy, there will be exclusions. Exclusions are things that are expressly not covered by that particular pet insurance policy.

The main exclusions in VPI policies are as follows:

-Internal or external Parasites
-Excess fees on your bill (food, waste removal, etc)
-Hereditary diseases
-Defects inherent to breed or lineage
-Pre-existing conditions
-Boarding/Grooming expenses
-Breeding related expenses
-Training and behavioral problems

No Instant Gratification Here

As much as you may hope and pray for your reimbursement to be completed as soon as possible, don’t bet anything on it. Depending on the number of claims the claim people are going through at once, it can take anywhere from two weeks to more to get your check back from VPI. Claim officers go through each and every claim personally, so if you don’t get your check right away don’t be surprised. VPI is a popular pet insurance company and a great deal of America’s pet owners trust them with the health and well being of their pet and their pocketbooks, so there may be a rather large number of claims to go through at once at any given time.

Veterinary Pet Insurance has been in business since 1982, and they are one of the most popular brands of pet insurance for a reason. All of the treatment decisions that you make for your pet and who you go to for your veterinary services is your business, they just cut the check at the end. It can be difficult to make important health decisions with an insurance company breathing down your ear, and with VPI you don’t have to worry about that.
