Affordable Pet Insurance: A Laymens Guide to Affordable Pet Insurance

Nearly every household in the United States has at least one pet, even if it is only a goldfish. Pets are an important part of American Society, and for good reason. They help to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels and can increase the quality of life as well. Pets help to keep us healthy and happy human beings, so don’t we owe it to them to provide the same for them as well, at least to the best of our ability? Of course, we do and affordable pet insurance can really help us to do so.

Pet insurance is a relatively new and novel concept for a lot of people, so don’t feel bad if you don’t know anything about pet insurance. Here are a few tips on selecting good, affordable pet insurance policies for your special friend.

Start Your Search Early

To keep pet insurance truly affordable, seek it out before your pet actually becomes ill. Finding out that your pet is ill and then looking for pet insurance policies to cover your needs is going to land you in hot water, and potentially preparing for an insurance policy that may not cover your pet’s medical bills. Pre-existing conditions are normally excluded, and affordable pet insurance policies rarely if every cover insurance policies for pre-existing and inheritable medical conditions. Also, the normal enrollment period is between eight weeks and eight years of age, so if you have an older pet you probably won’t be able to apply with the most affordable pet insurance companies.

Make Sure You Can Deal With Their Vets

One of the things you want to keep in mind when you are searching for affordable pet insurance is whether or not you will be able to keep using your own veterinarian or you have to switch to one of the veterinarians on their preferred list of providers. For some people, switching isn’t a problem but for others who have been using the same vet for the last fifteen years, switching veterinarians is just not a logical option.

Make Sure They Are Firm On Their Rates

Some pet insurance companies have rates that increase as your pet gets older, or as the number of claims that you submit increases. While the rebates are probably still going to be more affordable than the cost of your veterinary bill would be otherwise, if the rates are getting higher and higher as time goes on. That completely defeats the purpose of having affordable pet insurance in the first place, now doesn’t it?

Be Persistent

You may not find the best rates with the first company you decide to go with. Depending on your budget and the needs of your pets, you may have to search a bit and put in a little bit of work before you decide that a certain pet insurance provider is appropriate and affordable enough for your needs.
