A Guide to Auto Insurance in Iowa (IA)

If you drive, and you live in Iowa, you probably know it's a good idea to have Iowa auto insurance. The problem is, how do you find the best auto insurance for you? Let's take a look at some considerations.

First things first: The law

In reality, unless you want to post an enormous bond amount with the Iowa Department of Driver Services, you will need at least liability insurance.

That's because if you're involved in an accident and it's found to be your fault, AND damages from the accident exceed $1000, you have to be able to show proof of financial responsibility. If you don't, your license will be suspended.

Because of that, be smart and make sure you have Iowa auto insurance that has liability insurance as a basic minimum.

"Proof of financial responsibility"

What is proof of financial responsibility, exactly? You have to be able to do one of these things:

  • You have to be able to show that you're covered by at least liability insurance at the time of the accident.

  • You have to be able to post a certified check, bank draft, cashier's check, cash, or postal money order to the Office of Driver Services.

  • You have to get a decision if you are named in a civil damage action that relieves you of liability.

  • You have to be released from responsibility by the injured parties or other affected parties from any damages caused by the accident.

  • You have to file evidence that all damages or injuries have been completely settled.

  • You have to file an agreement that says you'll pay damages from the accident on installment, or

  • You have to execute a warrant for confession of judgment, including an agreement for a payment schedule of damages.

You can see that of these, the easiest iway to fiulfill your legal obligations is through showing that you at least have liability insurance.

The bottom line? Get some type of all Iowa auto insurance; at a minimum, get liability insurance.

In reality it is also a good idea to get uninsured motorist, collision or comprehensive insurance, and perhaps medical payments insurance, depending on your particular situation.

State 'minimum' legal requirements are exactly that. They are the absolute lowest standards possible just to keep people on the road. They are not really dealing with recommended levels of cover, just what the minimums are that you can get away with and still be legal on the roads.

None of that will matter if you actualy get into an accident, because the minums will most likely NOT be enough to meet the expenses, and you will have to foot the bill. So, if you are smart you will take out extra cover.

Showing proof of car insurance

If you own the car involved in the accident (whether you're driving or not) you have to show proof of financial responsibility, and the driver of the car, if different, must also show proof of financial responsibility.

The easiest way to do that is to show proof of auto insurance, so you would simply show the ID cards provided by your insurer when you got your policy.

Believe it or not, in terms of getting covered in Iowa to drive your car, getting auto insurance is actually by far the simplest option!

Finding the best coverage at the lowest rates for Iowa auto insurance

Depending on your situation, liability insurance is the minimum you should carry; if your car is newer than 10 years old and/or you don't own it outright, you should probably also carry collision and comprehensive insurance. It's also a good idea to get uninsured motorists' coverage, in the event someone who doesn't have insurance hits you; that way, you'll be covered.
