A Guide to Motorcycle Insurance in Nevada (NV)

Nevada is famous for casinos and gold (it is the world’s fourth largest producer), but it also has some amazing open terrain that is perfect for keen motorcyclists. And in this article I will be discussing Nevada Motorcycle Insurance and why if you want to explore Nevada properly on two wheels it is essential that you make sure to get comprehensive cover that properly protects you (and by extension other road users).

What are the state minimums for Nevada Motorcycle Insurance?

The state of Nevada lays down certain minimum requirements that all motorcyclists must meet in order to ride on the roads of Nevada.

These are:

$15,000 – Bodily injury liability for one person
$30,000 – Bodily injury liability for one accident
$10,000 – Property Damage Liability Cover

This is normally referred to as 15/30/10 cover.

Are the Nevada Motorcycle Insurance Minimums adequate?

The 15/30/10 levels that are laid down as the minimum requirements by the Nevada Legislature are actually quite low even by the standards of other states. A more typical minimum amount of cover is 25/50/25, so that fact alone should immediately give you pause for thought about just getting the state minimum amount of cover.

Common sense should also hopefully tell you that $10,000 is not a lot for property damage liability. As realistically whilst that might be enough to pay out if you damage someone’s front wall, it is unlikely to be enough to cover even the most basic motor vehicle accident, especially if another car for example is smashed up, is a write-off and needs replacing.

Ask yourself how much cars costs these days and you very rapidly start to realise that the state minimums for Motorcycle Insurance in Nevada might be enough to allow you to legally drive on the roads, but they are clearly not sufficient for most normal definitions of ‘feeling protected’, which is ultimately what getting insurance should be all about.

So, the first issue that you will face is to consider substantially increasing the basic amounts of liability cover that are required by law. Quite how much you need these to be is something that you will have to weigh up as you consider the prices of the different policies that are available. But nevertheless it would make sense to at least bring them up to the levels that most other states have as minimums.

In reality, much higher levels even then that would probably be preferable, as these are still ‘minimum’ requirements, and are not designed to be the latest advice in how much cover you really need, but simply making sure (through legal means) that you at least have some cover.

You should be sure to check that the medical portion of any Nevada Motorcycle Insurance that you are considering is comprehensive and offers high enough levels that you could realistically have an accident and it payout for multiple people to have treatment in hospital.

Nevada Motorcycle Insurance SealThis isn’t a ‘nice’ thing to have to think about, but if you are involved in an accident with a car or multiple cars with multiple occupants (like a highway pileup for example), and are found to be liable, then the costs can very quickly escalate into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So make sure that any Nevada Motorcycle insurance you get is good enough for the worst case scenarios, and not just the best case scenarios.

Accidents do happen even with all the best forethought and planning in the world, so make sure that you are prepared for them.

Another issue that has to be faced is that basic liability coverage does not cover your bike if it is stolen.

If you live in big cities in Nevada like Las Vegas, Henderson or Reno then this might be a bigger deal then in other places, but you do need to make a judgement call on quite how comprehensive you need your Nevada Motorcycle Insurance to be. The plain facts are that 8 motorcycles are stolen EVERY MINUTE in the United States, so this is much more common than you might think.

Of those bikes that are stolen only about 20% are ever recovered by law enforcement, so if your bike is stolen then the odds of getting it back are pretty poor.

You can not only get your motorcycle covered for theft, but also for accidental damage, vandalism and storm and fire damage. It really is up to you to decide how much you need these extra pieces of cover, because clearly they will all add to the final cost of your premium. But on the flip side, getting a better policy that offers much fuller coverage will provide you with greater peace of mind, so it is a balancing act.

The last piece of cover that you should seriously consider adding on is Underinsured/Uninsured Driver cover. This protects you from the 15% of drivers who either don’t have any insurance, or who don’t have enough cover. If you are in an accident with one of these drivers then your policy would kick in to meet the payments, even if it was their fault.

The bottom line with any type of insurance is that you need to be sure that it is fit for purpose. You can get less comprehensive cover, but you may find that simply by comparing more Nevada Motorcycle Insurance Quotes that you are able to get a better balance of features to price.
